In my opinion, the sound quality from the Tone2 Pro is getting close to the superb Chord Mojo DAC, one of the best pocket DACs on the market. The Khadas Tone2 Pro DAC brings music to life with incredible precision and soundstage but without ever being too harsh or metallic. I used the DAC for listening to MQA files streamed from TIDAL’s Masters music tier which offers hi-res audio files with the promise of an audio quality that’s as close to the original studio master tapes as it’s possible to get.Īnd what a sound. Once you’ve mastered or got a handle on the control wheel selection, the Khadas Tone2 Pro is ready to go. The wheel on the top of the Khadas Tone2 Pro is a click-and-turn selector for choosing settings like. This is one device where I would have preferred an LCD screen showing me exactly what I had selected. There’s just a bit too much on offer here and the push-and-select method of changing settings is confusing. For example, you can use the selector wheel for changing things like the gain level and there’s even a choice of seven different filters that can shape the sound of the music. There are a lot of settings and a lot of colors and it’s a bit of a puzzle. Then you have to refer to the instruction sheet to check you’ve selected the right setting. The only way you know if you’ve clicked on the correct setting is by looking at the color showing on the LED ring around the control. This high-quality output stage makes the Tone2 Pro ideal for driving high-quality headphones and earphones with impedances up to 150Ω.Īs I hinted a little earlier, the Khadas Tone2 Pro has a confusing control wheel that combines clicks and turns to change settings.

The amp stage on the Tone2 Pro is so good you don’t hear any hiss. Often, with digital devices, you will notice a low hiss from the amplifier when it’s idling and there’s no music playing or during a particularly quiet passage. The resulting sound has almost a total absence of background hiss or noise. The analog signal from the DAC is fed through to four Texas Instruments operational amplifiers and three buffer amplifiers. Like its predecessor, the Tone Board, the Khadas Tone2 Pro uses the same excellent ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip. The base of the Tone2 Pro is completely covered in a silicone material that stops it from slipping around when using that pesky control wheel.

However, I persevered and got there in the end. It takes a bit of getting used to and the instructions could be more helpful. It does different things at different times and can be used to select inputs but also functions as a beautifully smooth volume control.

In the beginning, I had a bit of a struggle trying to work out how to use the Khadas Tone2 Pro’s control wheel.

for coaxial digital input, linear power supply inputs plus USB data port. The rear of the Khadas Tone2 Pro is where there are outputs for connecting an amplifier and inputs.
